What Goes into The Making of a Couture Gown

Beauty doesn’t come from the dress; it comes from the woman wearing the dress. Yet a beautiful gown can still go a long way in creating a stunning and one-of-a-kind look! For a truly unique ensemble, couture gowns offer women the very best in luxury and style, providing a completely custom gown that no other woman will have on. Making a couture gown means making a garment with a specific woman in mind. Some of the steps involved in making a truly couture gown include:

  • Creating original gowns for clients based on their bodies and preferences. Most dresses are made to fit and flatter a variety of shapes and sizes, while couture gowns are made to fit and flatter just one—the buyer. In order to be truly couture, designers must make one-of-a-kind garments for customers, scheduling private fittings to take measurements and discuss the buyer’s desires for her gown.
  • Employing at least 15 full-time employees in a workshop in Paris. The word couture is used as a shorter version of “haute couture,” or “high sewing” in French. Because of its French origins, it’s no wonder why designers must do some of their work in France in order to be considered couture. In Paris, these dress workshops are known as ateliers.
  • Presenting 35 looks each season. Couture gowns may be made-to-order, but that doesn’t mean they have to miss the fun of the runway! Each season, couture designers must present 35 looks, containing ensembles for both day wear and night wear, to the Paris press. This helps designers show off their unique creations, while also displaying their signature styles and techniques. It also helps fashionistas determine which couture designers they want to hire.
